The MathCounts club of DeWitt Middle School earned first place in the team awards at the regional MathCounts competition held at SUNY Delhi on Saturday, February 1, 2025. The club also secured five top-eight finishes in the individual rankings, including 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 8th places.
The team will now advance to the state MathCounts competition, set to take place in Saratoga Springs on March 1, 2025. Representing DeWitt Middle School at the state level will be club members Ansel Brito-Edlund, Gio Lee, Juli Tang, Polly You, Isaac Zakharevich-Lamb, Mengdi Zeng, and Lisa Zhou.
Special thanks go to Joanne Thayer for leading weekly Thursday practices, Coach Dr. Inna Zakharevich for her biweekly math lectures, and coach and DeWitt alumnus Benjamin You for his biweekly MathCounts Problem Review lectures. Appreciation is also extended to DeWitt Principal Dan McGrath, ICSD Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Mary Grover, and Kathleen Troy for their continuous support.
MathCounts is a prestigious national mathematics competition for middle school students, engaging over 60,000 participants annually. It provides an exciting platform for students to develop problem-solving skills, think creatively, and compete both individually and as part of a team.
The DeWitt MathCounts club welcomes all students interested in math challenges and skill development to join at any time. The club offers free training and practice for competitions such as MathCounts and AMC 8, as well as opportunities for students to engage with math in a fun and supportive environment.
The Ithaca City School District supports math education through enhanced curriculum resources, flexible acceleration pathways, and targeted interventions. Students access advanced coursework while building strong problem-solving skills, and enrichment opportunities like MathCounts encourage deeper engagement beyond the classroom.
