Nicki Zawel, Ithaca High School band director, has been named one of 50 Music Teachers Who Make a Difference by School Band and Orchestra (SBO) magazine. This national recognition highlights Zawel’s remarkable dedication to student learning, creativity, and community building through music education.
Zawel, known for her commitment to fostering excellence and joy in music, leads with a vision that blends musical rigor with inclusive, student-centered practices. Her work exemplifies the ICSD Fine and Performing Art Department’s mission to inspire learning, critical thinking, and identity development through the arts.
“Being an excellent musical citizen means listening louder than you play and trying to approach each new experience with open ears, an open mind, and an open heart,” Zawel said. “As students leave my classroom each day, they pass through doors that say, ‘On All Days, In All Ways, Be Excellent To Each Other.’ In music, as in life, this is our most important work.”
As we reflect on the year’s achievements, we celebrate collective growth across the ICSD Fine and Performing Arts Department:
The flourishing of emerging artists, musicians, and performers, as incredible talent and creativity continue to blossom among ICSD students.
Growing student participation in district-wide instrumental programs, highlighting the exciting opportunities for young musicians to develop their skills and passions.
A shared commitment to curriculum and pedagogy that fosters knowledge, joy, critical thinking, identity, and skill.
Record-breaking audience attendance at concerts, showcasing the engaging and inspiring performances students have created.
The ICSD’s Fine and Performing Arts Department recognizes that the study of music, art, and theater inspires learning, critical thinking, identity development, and strong communities. We celebrate the authentic selves of all students and work to cultivate loving relationships through anti-racist, inclusive, culturally responsive practices. Students explore their artistic voices and hone their skills in music, art, and theater through authentic performance opportunities in school and in the community.
