The Ithaca City School District (ICSD) has been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 25th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students.
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, the ICSD answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
“The success of our program is a result of the remarkable teachers who tirelessly guide and inspire young people to explore their creative potential on a daily basis.” Daphne Shululu, Director of Fine and Performing Arts, shared. “The support from caregivers and the community plays a vital role in nurturing the growth of students as they shape their identities as emerging artists. The dedication and talent of our educators, combined with the strong support system from families and the community, create an environment where young artists can thrive and reach their full potential.”
The ICSD’s Fine and Performing Arts Department recognizes that the study of music, art, and theater inspires learning, critical thinking, identity development, and strong communities. Research continues to support the educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music: After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than students who are not involved in music education.
At the ICSD, we celebrate the authentic selves of all students and work to cultivate loving relationships through anti-racist, inclusive, culturally responsive practices. Students explore their artistic voices and hone their skills in music, art, and theater through authentic performance opportunities in school and the community. This year, the department has hosted over 40 performing arts events, including theatrical productions, concerts, and art shows in the ICSD performance spaces.
Thank you to our staff, students, and community for continuing to support the Fine and Performing Arts Department.
